Hello, travel bugs!

First off, I’d like to thank Holly for extending part of her corner of the internet to me to share my travel thoughts and knowledge with her readers. Equipping women with insider travel information is something I love to do.

Holly’s blog is amazing, so I am honoured to be writing this guest post for you all today.

Top 4 overlooked travel destinations:

With that being said, let’s discuss overlooked, underrated travel destinations.

While London, Paris, and Rome are all beautiful cities that deserve to be seen and visited, there are so many beautiful underdog cities to explore, especially in Europe!

What better way to travel nowadays than alone, where you can do whatever you want, whenever you want?

If you are not convinced that you need to travel solo, let me tell you about four amazing places in Europe that you will not want to share with anyone else!

Here are my top four overlooked travel destinations that deserve your solo attention:

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon…or Lisboa, I have talked about a bit on my blog before, and for good reason: it is simply magnificent.

The rich culture and history, the delicious foods, the beautiful views, and the plethora of attractions to visit make it the perfect place to visit solo.

Why?

You will never be bored here!

You can take a telecabine ride and see the city from a bird’s eye view; ride the Hippotrip and explore Lisbon from land and sea; enjoy delicious ice cream by the water; watch a game of European football; or drink a margarita with a view of the 25 de Abril Bridge.

There is also a great shopping scene in Lisboa, with marketplaces and a huge mall to explore.

The citizens of Lisbon are incredibly kind, as well. I never felt unsafe during my visit.

Make sure you visit the Castelo de S. Jorge for a chance to see an 11th century castle, and try a pastel de nata with a cup of tea from Pastéis de Belém while you are there! (Trust me, the line at Pastéis de Belém is worth the wait.)

Galway, Ireland

When people think of visiting Ireland, they think about going to Dublin, the Cliffs of Moher, or to see the beautiful Irish castles in County Cork and County Clare.

While those are all great places to see and experience in Ireland, you absolutely MUST go to Galway if you are going to Ireland.

It is a beautiful town with delicious traditional Irish cuisine, as well as great shops to peruse until you drop!

While walking around, it will feel like you have traveled back in time in the most magical way!

When you are in Ireland, you are truly family. The Irish people made me feel welcome every single second I was there.

They are incredibly kind and helpful. Make sure you do not buy yourself a Claddagh ring — it is bad luck!

Instead…Have someone else buy it for you [with your own money] and gift it to you.

(Do not worry, they will understand!)

I was able to go to Galway through an Ireland trip facilitated by Bus2Alps and I so wish we could’ve spent more time in this beautiful town. (It is also the only place in Ireland that I went to that has an Irish-American classic: corned beef!)

Bath, England

Let’s be honest with ourselves, okay?

If you’re thinking about England or the United Kingdom as a whole, your first destination in mind is most likely London.

London is an amazing city–one of my favourite cities in the whole world–but Bath is absolutely stunning and worth your solo trip!

You can try authentic fish n’ chips without paying the city prices for it.

It is also a great way to see England if you are not a fan of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Make sure you check out the Roman Baths while you’re there.

They’re a beautiful way to learn about the history of Bath, as well as drink the special water there for good health!

If you’re a Jane Austen fan, you absolutely need to put Bath on your travel bucket list and take a Jane Austen tour.

You can see her flat where she lived and feel like a character from one of her novels.

Sicily, Italy

I wish I could include my own pictures of Sicily here.

I have personally never been, but hearing exciting stories from people who have visited makes me want to go more and more!

Sicily is one of the most southern parts of Italy, making it the perfect fusion of Mediterannean/Italian culture while also being close geographically to Tunisia and Libya.

Why should you visit Sicily over Rome or Venice, you might ask?

There is a huge money-saving reason why you should consider traveling solo to Sicily: once COVID-19 has subsided and international tourism can resume as normal, Sicily will be offering vouchers to help cover travel costs!

It’s also fun to go against the grain a bit and see these overlooked areas of the world.

(Really, do I need to convince you too hard to go solo wine tasting and eat all the pasta to your heart’s content while gawking at the beautiful Italians AND have help paying for your trip? What could be better?!)

Thanks for coming along for the ride…

I hope these little bite-sized pieces of information help you narrow down your next solo travel destination!

There are so many more underrated travel destinations around the world, but I always do my best to handpick places that I have personal [or secondhand experience with to truly be able to recommend a trip with my whole heart.

Make sure you check out my blog for a travel content buffet of money-saving hacks and European travel tips.

Thank you again, Holly, for the chance to write a piece for your awesome blog!

Thanks for coming along for the ride. x
